Dos Ojos Cenote Location and Name

Possibly the most famous cenote in the world, Dos Ojos, which is also known as the “Two Eyes” cenote, is located 14 miles north of Tulum in Quintana Roo, Mexico. This site got it's name as it is actually two separate eye shaped sinkholes spaced only 150ft apart. Nevertheless they are connected to each other via awinding underground cavern corridor which is approximately 1300ft in length.

What To Expect

Before we descend into this entrance to the Mayan underworld, you will receive a briefing from your guide who is a PADI professional and holds further certification from TDI as a full cave diver. This briefing will give you tips and tricks to safely descend into the cenote and enjoy its array of treasures such as speleothems (a fancy name for rock formations), fossils and haloclines.

As with with most cenotes, the visibility here is absolutely spectacular and the light breaking in through the ceiling of the cavern gives the cavern gives off a heavenly aura to divers who explore its depths. Diving Dos Ojos will absolutely be one of the most memorable tours you'll ever experience in your career as a diver.

Dive guides enter the cenote

Two Unique Diving Routes

There are two unique routes for divers to follow so we will typically offer this tour as a 2 tank dive so that you can have the chance to explore both. The Bat Cave has a dark section of cavern which isn't completely underwater and so, as the name suggests, has become home to a legion of bats. The second section is named the Barbie line. Initially, when this part of the cenote was first explored, divers mysteriously found an abandoned Barbie doll in an otherwise inaccessible area of the cave. A replacement Barbie, being eaten by a ferocious crocodile, has now been entangled into the guide line to mark where her predecessor was once found.

Animal Life

On your way to the cenote you will get to enjoy a short drive through the pristine Quintana Roo jungle which is home to jaguar, howler monkey and iguana. However there is very little in the way of fish or other animal life below the waterline. Instead, these dives are all about taking in the bewitching vistas and the seemingly alien world found within the sanctums just below the surface of our wondrous planet.

Snorkeling With Divers

With two cenotes to explore and water temperatures of 76°F or 24°C year round, Dos Ojos is the perfect option for scuba divers who want bring their non-diving friends and family along to join us on their own snorkeling adventure. Furthermore, these cenotes are surrounded by wild Mayan jungle, two restaurants and, most days, a little market to purchase all your Mexican mementos and trinkets.
