Make the most of your visit to Chichén Itzá with this fantastic tour which also takes you to explore the famous Cenote Zaci-Ha and the colonial city of Valladolid in which you will enjoy a delicious buffet at the exclusive La Casona restaurant. This is a great, relaxing option for families with young children.
The tour begins with an early morning pickup directly from the lobby of your hotel so we can beat the morning traffic out of the city and make sure that you get the most out of your day.
The first stop will see you being treated to a traditional Mayan buffet which includes distinct dishes such as chimole (chicken served in a rich tomato sauce with sweet pepper and black recado over rice), mole (chicken or pork cooked with Mexican dried chilies, seeds, nuts, dried fruit, onion, garlic, spices and, perhaps most importantly, dark Mexican chocolate) and Pibil (slow roasted pork which has been marinated in citrus juice and cooked in banana leaf).
Your next stop will be at open-air Cenote Zaci-Ha which roughly translates to “Sparrowhawk Water”. With a towering arching half cave over a portion of the large pool, the location is breathtaking in its grandeur. The water in the cenote is roughly 330ft or 100m deep and so is better for swimming than snorkeling. Please note that Zaci-Ha staff endeavour to keep the natural splendor intact for generations to come and therefore ask that we don't enter the water whilst wearing sunblock, including reef friendly variants, or insect repellent as these both have a negative effect on the limestone walls.
Upon arrival at Chichén Itzá, you will be greeted with a view of the main attraction: El Castillo. This pyramid was built in the mid-fifth century in honor of the Mayan god kukulcan and has been specifically engineered, using the shadow of the pyramid itself, to give the illusion of this supposed god descending to earth during the spring and autumn equinoxes.
Other sites worth visiting at Chichén Itzá include The Temple of Warriors, The Caracol – an ancient observatory used to view the night sky from above the vegetation – and The Ball Court where the Maya would play a high stakes ball game, not too dissimilar to modern day soccer, where the leader of the loosing team would often be sacrificed in order to preserve the peoples trade and agricultural success as well as the overall health of the tribe.
On the return leg of the tour, you stop in Valladolid where you can choose to walk and explore the city and its fine Spanish colonial architecture, some of which dates far back as 1706, or simply stroll through the town “zócalo” or town square to peruse the market for trinkets and various Mexican desserts.
